The American C-47 Skytrain (Dakota to RAF) was a militarised redesign of the civilian DC-3 airliner, highly valued for its rugged endurance. Under lend-lease agreements with the Soviet Union, the redesign DC-3 became the Li-2 Transport with the notable turret defence now included.
The official Luftwaffe Staffel was divided into three Schwärme ("swarms") each consisting of between four to six aircraft, though this was subject to evolving tactics during the course of the War. It was not uncommon earlier in the war for Staffel to consist of a much larger number of aircraft.
Although an advanced design in the 1930's the Tupolev SB-2 was rapidly becoming obsolete when hostilities began in 1941. Over 6000 had been built, but a few survived the first year of invasion and the survivors were withdrawn from the front line service in 1942.
